Once again I have managed to hit two birds with one stone. This time I picked up some steampunk romance, which wasn’t intentional. I read a lot of steampunk stuff, and it often has a romance element, but these ones were published as romance so it’s safe to say that the level of intimate detail was more in depth than most of my books. (Read: lots and lots of sex)
I have to admit that I didn’t just read one of these books. I read every one in the series that has been published so far. I’m slightly addicted to the genre at the moment.
The good thing about reading these on the Kobo was that I was able to get previews of a number of series before I decided on which ones I wanted to read. After checking out a number of suggestions from Goodreads and Kobo, I found the writing style of two authors to suit my tastes.
Bec McMaster and Beth Ciotta have similar writing styles. I liked the quick action, the engaging characters, and the emotional buildup of many of the scenes. The bad guys were interesting, which was wonderful to see, because often steampunk books have some nebulous “evil society” that seems to have no motivation besides being evil.
Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk series had a lot of great characters that I was so happy to see each got their own story. From the brooding vampire, to the debutant wannabe, each of the main characters both male and female weren’t exactly what they seemed. I look forward to reading the final novel, because I have been curious about the two featured characters since their introduction to the series.
Beth Ciotta’s Glorious Victorious Darcys‘ series is also unfinished, and I have SO MANY QUESTIONS! Set in an alternate history that has come about due to time travelling hippies, there is so much potential for this series to cross many different genre barriers. I can only assume that the third book will be about the other Darcy brother and his past, which has been an ongoing mystery throughout the first two books (even to his own siblings). I never did read the short story that is a spinoff of one of the secondary characters, but I’m sure I’ll get around to it when I can.
Next up, it’s time to break out of my comfort zone and try something that I would never have read without this challenge. Let’s see what I can come up with…
