Happy Hug Your Cat (book) Day!

Since I don’t have a cat anymore I thought I should celebrate this day by giving some love to the fictional cats in my life. Chester by Melanie Watt is hilarious, and if I ever get another cat I hope it will be as amusing as he is.

Some other great cat books are:

• Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World by Vicki Myron with Bret Witter – I remember hearing about this cat long before I started working in a book store. Everyone loves happy endings, especially when the hero of the story is an adorable cat that ends up living in a library. This cat seriously ended up living the dream of every avid reader. With multiple spin-offs for adults and children, this cat definitely earned his keep.
• A Street Cat Named Bob: How One Man and His Cat Found Hope on the Streets by James Bowen – This lovable cat is one of my regular customer’s favourite felines. She will literally purchase any book written about Bob. His presence brought attention to a homeless man, which helped the man and the cat get off the street. I know that I would pay attention to a cat in a scarf. My cat barely wanted to wear her collar!
• The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss – Crawl back into your cave if you have no idea who this cat is. I remember reading this book with my babysitter as a child, and then begging her to read it again and again. The people at the library were probably sick of hearing the same story read aloud every single week, multiple times, but I loved this story. I think every kid hopes that a magical cat will show up to make their afternoon a bit more fun.
• The Warriors Series by Erin Hunter – I have a lot of kids come in to my store asking for these books, so one day I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Talking cats who live in clans in the woods behind your house would have absolutely appealed to me as a kid… heck, I liked the first book as an adult! I loved reading about the house cat, Rusty, who had to learn all the rules of living in the wild. I have to commend the author on her imagination and world building.
• Pete the Cat by Eric Litwin – I recently had a lady come in looking for “stinky Pete” which I eventually figured out was supposed to be Pete the Cat. I was lucky enough to meet Pete at a HarperCollins event last year, so I’ll just share this lovely picture with you guys instead of going into too much detail.
