Q: Would you stop reading a book if an element of the plot strongly clashed with your personal beliefs, or would you continue reading until you finished the book? (submitted by Maria @ A Night’s Dream of Books)
A: That’s a really interesting question. My beliefs can be summed up pretty simply: “be a good person.” So really, finding a book that clashes with my beliefs is going to be rather difficult unless we are talking about something like Mein Kampf. When I give up a book it’s usually because I don’t like the writing style or the story isn’t keeping me interested. Even if I don’t agree with certain scenes or themes in a book, I will still keep reading because I might learn why someone would do those things or think that way.

I think the way an issue is handled is important as well. If I’m enjoying the book than I will keep reading despite an issue that might make me uncomfortable but if I feel like the author is really trying to push a viewpoint (even if I agree with it) I’m typically going to DNF the book.

I’m similar. It would be hard to come across anything that upset me to the point where I’d stop reading. I’ve not found one so far.

I have a few strong beliefs, but I don’t mind reading books that go against them as long as those books explore why the characters or the book itself presents such beliefs. I like to know why people do things so as long as there’s an explanation or possible exploration, I’ll read it.

This sums up how I feel too–but you said it much more succinctly and clearly. 🙂 Thank you for sharing. I hope you have a great week!

Excellent response. I usually try to “stick it out” for the same reason – new knowledge. However, sometimes I just can’t! *sigh*
