TTT: The Last Five Books That Gave Me a Book Hangover

Finding ten books to write about this week has been difficult, so I’m just going to do 5 instead. I don’t feel like I ever get book hangovers. I like a book, I might talk about it a lot, but nothing stops me from moving on to the next one. However, these are the books that surprised me in various ways and made me think a bit deeper about them afterwards.

The Bromance Book Club by Lyssa Kay Adams – There’s something about this book that makes me think about it a lot. I think it’s might be because it’s written in the man’s perspective, which is unique for the romance genre. I really liked the fact that this is a group of guys who aren’t afraid to show their emotions, are willing to learn and grow, and who care enough about their relationships that they will do anything to be better partners.

The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton – I don’t know what I expected when I started listening to this audiobook, but this was a total mind-trip that I really enjoyed. This book takes you on a journey that is unexpected and incredible. Now that I know the ending, I don’t know if I will be able to read it again, but I really want to because knowing the ending means that I can spot all the clues along the way.

Midnight Riot by Ben Aaronovitch – This is another book where the ending just threw me for a loop. I was not expecting things to go the way they did, and yet, it made me want to keep reading the series. The author has a bad habit of treating the women in his books like sex objects, but I’m willing to overlook that because he’s managed to create an interesting urban fantasy series with twists that keep me coming back for more.

Becoming by Michelle Obama – I don’t read a lot of non-fiction because I like books to be an escape, but this one really made me sit up and think. Michelle is an amazing woman who continues to inspire others even without being the first lady. This book is full of great stories. My favourite, which I tell all my customers about, is her first meeting with Barack. This is a love story, a family drama, and an inspirational journey all in one.

Killer Characters by Ellery Adams – This series really took it out of me because there were some twists near the end that I was totally not expecting. Most cozy mysteries tend to follow the “happily ever after” trope, but this and a few other series just throw you for a loop when they take things in a completely different direction. This seemed a bit more realistic because it was more like “life goes on”, and that doesn’t often happen in books.

Do you ever get book hangovers? Or do you find yourself really thinking hard about a book or series after you are done?

  1. Becoming was definitely hard to put down for me. I just didn’t want it to get over, so I kept listening to the audiobook very sporadically .. but I agree that it’s amazing and I don’t think I’ve picked up another audio after that…
Bromance book club was a lot of fun too !!
    Nice list 😊😊

  2. Oh I can see how an immersive audiobook would be hard to come out of! My mum was absolutely shaken by an ensemble cast audiobook of Wuthering Heights and had to sit with all the big lights on for some bits!!! Amazing how books can draw us in!

  3. I feel the same way that you do in terms of book hangovers not stopping me from picking up my next read.

I loved Becoming – Michelle Obama is such a wonderful woman, she’s intelligent and personable and her voice really came across in that book. I’m not American so I don’t have that connection to her as a former First Lady but she really did seem like she was worthy of a lot of respect and admiration.

  4. The 7½ Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle is one I will definitely have to re-read at some point. I have this weird thing where I only gave it 3.5 stars at the time, but I think back on it more fondly than a 3.5-star read. Maybe when I read it again, I’ll decide to raise my rating.

  5. Evelyn Hardcastle hit me hard too! It probably didn’t help that I literally had no idea what the book was about, I didn’t read the synopsis or look that much into reviews. I just kept seeing it brought up a lot by other readers and decided to read it. What a shocker once I realized what was going on! haha
