This week I have started using my local library services again. Lately my ebook and audiobook consumption has gone through the roof while being at home all day long. I have a Scribd membership that I absolutely love, but unfortunately my usage has gone over their limits and I have to wait until the 22nd to access most of the books that I’ve saved. There are still a lot of books I can access on there, but they aren’t titles that I am currently interested in.
I haven’t used my local library’s services much in the last 15 years. I borrowed a physical book a few years ago and returned it late which left me with a small late fee. As happens to many people, I felt so bad about the charge waiting for me to pay back that I just avoided borrowing anything from them again. Now that the library has done away with late fees and I am desperate for books to read, I have decided to try again. I’m only using their digital services because I don’t want to be responsible for a physical book. This makes sure that I can’t be late returning things, but also am not spending money on digital copies from other resources.

What I’m Watching
For years my in-laws have been obsessively watching Murdoch Mysteries but somehow I was never drawn to it. But lockdown can make a person desperate for any new tv, and Netflix has all 13 seasons available, so that’s what I’ve been watching. Now I’m kicking myself for missing out on this for so long! I mean, look at that quirky adorable man and tell me that you don’t want to find out what the heck he’s up to! The characters are wonderful, and I love being able to identify filming locations I know from my wanders around Toronto.
Off the Blog
I keep getting orders on the little online postcard shop (cravepaper.com) that I started a few years ago. I don’t know how people are finding it, honestly. I don’t advertise in any way, but over the last few months I have been getting orders every couple of weeks. I assume that I must be getting recommendations from the wonderful Postcrossing communities that I used to frequent on Facebook. It’s always such a nice surprise, and maybe some day I might actually make money on this. Right now the money I poured in to stock, shipping supplies, and web hosting basically just make it a labour of love.
So hey, if you live in Canada and like to send snail mail, maybe check out my shop? Unfortunately I had to turn off international orders because the mail system has been super slow since COVID hit.

The one bonus of Covid is that my local library has increased its ebook catalogue, it’s a great resource.
I enjoyed binging on The Murdoch Mysteries too, I’ve been appreciating more wholesome shows since the world went to hell.

When my Library opened, I was so happy, lol. I probably go there once a month, but it’s mainly to pick up books I’ve put on hold and return ones.

I MUST check out my library’s ebook selection! I know they have one – I just haven’t bothered to look at it properly, which is ridiculous… I looked at your postcards – what a lovely idea!

Thank you!!! It’s such a fun way to get to know people. I have penpals who I have never interacted with outside of snail mail and I feel like I know them so much better than some of my social media buds. People are so open when they write things down.

I think you are right. And of course historians in times to come will be struggling so much more, as the relatively ephemeral nature of digital communication bites us in the bottom…

I did the same thing with my library but started back up a few years ago (they made it so you could pay fines online or at a kiosk so I didn’t have to actually face anyone with the shame!) and normally get paper books and would occasionally get audio from Libby but when Covid started they added Hoopla and I am addicted to it! You can only get 5 audio books a month but that seems to be the max on how many audio books I can listen to a month anyway so it works. Have a great week!

You know, as a librarian, I can tell you we’re not angry at people who return books late, we don’t want to yell at them and we understand perfectly that well, life happens. The fees exist so we can finally get the books back and lend them to another person 🙂 (You wouldn’t believe the number of librarians who are late returning their books, lol). The virtual library is a good solution and I’m very much interested in Scribd myself to get the books that my library doesn’t own. Enjoy your books and have a great week 😉

Oh, I am sure that the librarians would have been super nice about it. I just listen to my anxious brain too much. 😅 It literally took me years to even get a library card because I didn’t want to have to deal with facing someone to sign up. For some reason I can easily approach strangers when I’m being paid to do it, but if it’s not absolutely necessary in my personal life I will put it off forever.
