The Reading Habits Tag

I picked up this tag over at Art and Soul because I need some more ideas for posts this month (NaBloPoMo) and I liked the idea of sharing my reading habits. I have a feeling I might have been tagged by someone for this before, but my brain is mush and I can’t remember.

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?

book-690584_640I have a spot on the couch where most of my reading and watching TV happens. I wouldn’t say it’s the only place in the house I read though. I basically just walk around the house with a book in my hand at all times.

Bookmark or random piece of paper?

I used to use random bits of paper all the time, but then I found these magnetic book marks and I LOVE using them. My trouble with all bookmarks is that I forget to take them out of the book when I finish, so I just have a bunch of bookmarked books around the house and can never find a bookmark when I need one.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop at the end of a chapter/a certain amount of pages?

I tend to just stop wherever I am when I can’t read anymore. I had to learn to do that when I started reading during my commute. It’s not like I can keep going to the next stop just because I haven’t finished a page.

Do you eat or drink while reading?

coffee-690421_640Yep. Sometimes you’ll see me at the dinner table with a book in my hand, even though I know that it is incredibly rude. I’m an introvert… whatcha gonna do about it?

Multitasking: music or TV whilst reading?

I almost always have some type of background noise going on when I read. I used to listen to music all the time, but for the last few years I’ve just had the TV on in the background. It drives my husband crazy.

One book at a time or several at once?

Several at once, of course! I generally have about 5 books on the go at any given time. It started when I had to read extra things for school and has blossomed into a full-blown problem. If I’m not in the mood for one book, I just move on to another one and come back to it later. It can get confusing though.

Read at home or everywhere?

human-732273_640EVERYWHERE! I read in the car, on the bus, while walking, at work… you get the point. And now that I don’t have to carry a physical book with me everywhere, it’s even worse than it was before.

Read aloud or silently in your head?

It depends on the book. Usually it’s just in my head, but if I’m struggling with a sentence or concept in the book I might read it out loud just to hear it. This usually only happens with non-fiction though.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?

I don’t really skip ahead at all, although I will skim a page for interesting content. If the page is full of long-winded descriptions and the action in the book was just starting to get good I might skim ahead to an action scene or dialogue. I don’t ever just skip whole pages though.

Breaking the spine or keeping it new?

I tend to be really gentle with my books, so breaking the spine is a big no-no for me. Books that I have reread many times may eventually get that way, but it’s never intentional.

Do you write in books?

person-984236_640Only in textbooks, and it’s usually just highlighting key passages. I have tried writing in the margins a few times, but I’m so bad about taking notes while reading that even that stops after the first little while. I do like to use flags on pages with quotes that I like though.

Instead of tagging people, I’m just going to leave this open for anyone else who wants to do it. So… you’re it (if you wanna be)!
