Q: Do you think that readers make better employees, as opposed to non-readers? Why or why not? (submitted by Maria @ A Night’s Dream of Books)
A: As a bookseller I’m a bit biased in this respect, because I think that anyone who works in a bookstore should be a reader. I don’t care what you read, but you better have at least a passing understanding of genres and know at least some of the big authors (ie. Stephen King, James Patterson, JK Rowling).
However, in my various office jobs I also think that readers *usually* make the best employees for the following reasons:
- can spell
- open-minded
- creative/imaginative
- educated
All that said… there are readers out there who don’t have some or any of these qualities. I would honestly rather work with someone who is smart, caring, and friendly but doesn’t read at all if the alternative was someone who reads but is horrible.
